This presentation will explore some of the major trends in reading education, including assessment and accountability, overcoming the COVID shutdown, the science of reading, second language literacy, teaching reading with complex text, and disciplinary literacy. This presentation will be based on the best current research along with Dr. Shanahan’s own experiences in raising reading achievement on a large scale with diverse and disadvantaged populations. What will it take to maximize literacy levels? This presentation will help to answer that question.

Join speculative fiction writer Eve Smith and Professor Jo Verran, Emeritus Professor of Microbiology, as they talk about their respective careers and share some insights into the success of Bad Bugs Book Club - a reading group set up by Jo that aims to engage both scientists and non-scientists in talking about infectious disease through books.
